Getting jobs in Germany !

Perfect your German before finding jobs!

German salaries are one of the highest in the world, with around £21/hour. Thanks to the European laws of free circulation, every European is now able to work in Germany.

You can find many vacancies in a variety of industries and there are a large range of resources to consult. It's a matter of knowing which are the best places to look. We will provide you with some advice and links for you to find a job in Germany.

Most positions require a strong ability in the German language. You must perfect your skills in German before applying in Germany, Austria and Switherland. However, lots of German companies who are involved in business worldwide require more and more bilingual people, especially fluent English-speaking candidates.

Moreover, you can find good career opportunities, such as teaching, in big international organisations. Administrative positions are available in multi-national companies like Shell or Hewlett-Packard. Remember too, that German companies often relocate around the world, so you can use your skills in German to find positions worldwide, in companies such as Volkswagen or Mercedes in England.

During your job searches, you will probably note that most of the positions are filled by recruiting German people, as they often have a high standard of English as well as their fluent German. You will probably have a better chance if you are already located in Germany. You may wish to contact your national Embassy to get information about relocation and employment opportunites in Germany.

The German rate of unemployment, called Arbeitslosigkeit, is still quite high, which makes it more difficult for a non-german to get a position. Technical positions in certain fields (Computer Science, Biology...), are often easier to come by.

Most foreigners overestimate their language skills and underestimate the level of competition to find a job in Germany. Most candidates have the similar technical skills, so the level of your language skills will usually be the most important advantage to get the job.

Don't neglect the Internet to find jobs!

The Internet contains hundreds of sites dedicated to job offers or on-line job applications.

Generally, surfing the specialized sites gives you more success in finding an interesting vacancy.

Many people search for a job on general recruitment websites, so you will have to face a lot of competition to submit your application.

The best way for you to increase your chances is to combine both of these operating modes (general recruitment websites and specialised websites).

Remember, it is better to enclose your CV in an attachment (in Word format), rather than including it in the body copy of the e-mail.

The .RTF format is also good because it can be read worldwide on every platform. Also, the size of the folder will be smaller.
